Find out how to get started.

The graceful images of people gliding through dance-like poses as they practice tai chi (TIE-chee) are compelling. Simply watching them is relaxing. Tai chi, in fact, is often described as "meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body.

Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense, tai chi is a graceful form of exercise that has existed for some 2,000 years. Practiced regularly, tai chi can help you reduce stress and enjoy other health benefits.

Understanding tai chi

Tai chi, sometimes called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pausing.

Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice tai chi. It doesn't take physical prowess. Rather, tai chi emphasizes technique over strength.

Tai chi is used to:
- Reduce stress
- Increase flexibility
- Improve muscle strength and definition
- Increase energy, stamina and agility
- Increase feelings of well-being

Tai chi has more than 100 possible movements and positions. You can find several that you like and stick with those, or explore the full range. The intensity of tai chi varies somewhat depending on the form or style practiced. Some forms of tai chi are more fast-paced than others, for instance. However, most forms are gentle and suitable for everyone. And they all include rhythmic patterns of movement that are coordinated with breathing.

Although tai chi is generally safe, consider talking with your doctor before starting a new program. This is particularly important if you have any problems with your joints, spine or heart.

Stress reduction and other benefits of tai chi

Like other practices that bring mind and body together, tai chi can reduce stress. During tai chi, you focus on movement and breathing. This combination creates a state of relaxation and calm. Stress, anxiety and tension should melt away as you focus on the present, and the effects may last well after you stop your tai chi session.

Tai chi may also help your overall health, although it's not a substitute for traditional medical care. Tai chi is generally safe for people of all ages and levels of fitness. Older adults may especially find tai chi appealing because the movements are low impact and put minimal stress on muscles and joints. Tai chi may also be helpful if you have arthritis or are recovering from an injury.

Despite its ancient history, tai chi has been studied scientifically only in recent years. And that research is suggesting that tai chi may offer numerous other benefits beyond stress reduction, including:
- Reducing anxiety and depression
- Improving balance and coordination
- Reducing the number of falls
- Improving sleep quality, such as staying asleep longer at night and feeling more - alert during the day
- Slowing bone loss in women after menopause
- Lowering blood pressure
- Improving cardiovascular fitness
- Relieving chronic pain
- Improving everyday physical functioning

Learning to do tai chi

Wondering how to get started in tai chi? You don't need any special clothing or equipment to do tai chi. To gain full benefits, however, it may be best to seek guidance from a qualified tai chi instructor.

A tai chi instructor can teach you specific positions and how to regulate your breathing. An instructor also can teach you how to practice tai chi safely, especially if you have injuries, chronic conditions, or balance or coordination problems. Although tai chi is slow and gentle, with virtually no negative side effects, injuries are possible if tai chi isn't done properly. It's possible you could strain yourself or overdo it when first learning. Or if you have balance problems, you could fall during tai chi.

You can find tai chi classes in many communities today. Contact your local senior center, YMCA or YWCA, health club, community education center or wellness facility for help finding qualified instructors.

During tai chi classes, the instructor can give you personal guidance and correct any errors in your style before they become habit. Eventually, you may feel confident enough to do tai chi on your own. But if you like the social element, consider sticking with group classes.

Putting tai chi into practice

To reap the greatest stress reduction benefits from tai chi, consider practicing it regularly. Many people find it helpful to practice tai chi in the same place and at the same time every day to develop a routine. But if your schedule is erratic, do tai chi whenever you have a few minutes.

You can even draw on the soothing concepts of tai chi without performing the actual movements if you get stuck in stressful situations — a traffic jam or a work conflict, for instance.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 292px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SRhgLM1fISQ/SgPDIGv0uSI/AAAAAAAAAQY/FKv7XsiZmSI/s320/TaiChi24form.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333320927754369314" />

These are some wonderful exrcises, I've tried them myself and I can seriously say that they really work and even when you are so tired and out of balance, it helps you restablish your balance and it makes you feel so much better! Here are seven ways exercise can improve your life — starting today!
Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise.

The merits of exercise — from preventing chronic health conditions to boosting confidence and self-esteem — are hard to ignore. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing? Check out seven specific ways exercise can improve your life.
1. Exercise improves your mood.

Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down.

Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals, which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You'll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.
2. Exercise combats chronic diseases.

Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent osteoporosis? Regular exercise might be the ticket.

Regular exercise can help you prevent — or manage — high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will benefit, too. Regular exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol while decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the buildup of plaques in your arteries.

And there's more. Regular exercise can help you prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer.
3. Exercise helps you manage your weight.

Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch time for walking or other physical activities.

This one's a no-brainer. When you exercise, you burn calories. The more intensely you exercise, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You don't even need to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.
4. Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs.

Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Don't throw in the towel. Regular exercise can leave you breathing easier.

Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular exercise helps your entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels — work more efficiently. Big deal? You bet! When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy.
5. Exercise promotes better sleep.

Struggling to fall asleep? Or stay asleep? It might help to boost your physical activity during the day.

A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. And, you guessed it, exercise is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. The timing is up to you — but if you're having trouble sleeping, you might want to try late afternoon workouts. The natural dip in body temperature five to six hours after you exercise might help you fall asleep.
6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life.

Are you too tired to have sex? Or feeling too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Exercise to the rescue.

Regular exercise can leave you feeling energized and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there's more to it than that. Exercise improves your circulation, which can lead to more satisfying sex. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise, especially as they get older.
7. Exercise can be — gasp — fun!

Wondering what to do on a Saturday afternoon? Looking for an activity that suits the entire family? Get physical!

Exercise doesn't have to be drudgery. Take a ballroom dancing class. Check out a local climbing wall or hiking trail. Push your kids on the swings or climb with them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball or touch football game. Find an activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts!

Are you convinced? Good. Start reaping the benefits of physical activity today!

Breathing for Relaxation

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SRhgLM1fISQ/SemMb1SILAI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/CZdmwOytjFQ/s320/AA050961.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325942444129790978" />
Beginning students often ask for instructions on the "right" way to breathe. Alas, there's no single answer to that question, since the optimal breathing pattern at any given moment depends on the type of practice. Restorative yoga focuses solely on relaxation, though, and emphasizes breathing that creates calm and serene states of being. When you settle into restorative poses, try the following techniques for cultivating breathing patterns that are hallmarks of relaxation and well-being.

MOVE THE BELLY WITH THE BREATH. When we are at ease, the diaphragm is the primary engine of the breath. As we inhale, this domelike muscle descends toward the abdomen, displacing the abdominal muscles and gently swelling the belly. As we exhale, the diaphragm releases back toward the heart, enabling the belly to release toward the spine.

KEEP THE UPPER BODY QUIET. During high-stress times, it's common to heave the upper chest and grip the muscles in the shoulders and throat. When we're at rest, the muscles of the upper chest remain soft and relaxed as we breathe, and the real work occurs in the lower rib cage. To promote this type of breathing pattern, consciously relax the jaw, throat, neck, and shoulders, and envision the breath sweeping into the deepest parts of the lungs as you breathe in and out.

BREATHE EASY. Although some breaths may be deeper or faster than others, when we're relaxed, the alternating rhythm of the inhalations and exhalations feels like a lullaby—smooth, soft, and uninterrupted by jerks and jags. Consciously relaxing into this wavelike, oceanic quality of the breath deepens our sense of peace and ease.

LENGTHEN THE EXHALATIONS. When we feel stressed, our exhalations tend to grow short and choppy. When we're relaxed, though, the exhalations extend so completely that they are often longer than the inhalations. Some teachers even instruct that if we're deeply relaxed, each exhalation will be twice as long as the inhalation. To facilitate this, try gently extending each exhalation by one or two seconds.

PAUSE AFTER EACH EXHALATION. In our most relaxed state, the end of each exhalation is punctuated by a short pause. Lingering in this sweet spot can be deeply satisfying and can evoke feelings of profound quiet and stillness.

LET THE WHOLE BODY BREATHE. When we are at ease, the whole body participates in the breathing process. Imagine a sleeping baby: When he breathes in and out, the belly swells and releases, the hips rock to and fro, the shoulders bob, and the spine gently undulates. This offers a mini-massage for the muscles and organs of the whole body, and turns each breath into a soothing melody that further calms and quiets every cell within.

How do get rid of cellulite?

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SRhgLM1fISQ/Sap7mrpe7zI/AAAAAAAAAPY/PnJts-NhE0I/s320/cellulite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308191015291514674" />
A type of massage that helps you get rid of cellulite.
Cellulite is a problem that affects women all over the world and it's easy to prevent it. Most factors come from a bad diet, smoking, sedentariness, not getting enough rest and wearing clothes that are too tight.
TREATMENT:
1.Phisical exercises
In a supine position with your feet supported on the floor and with your knees bent. Lift your body and stay like this as much as you can. It helps you strain and relax your muscles.

Stay in a walking position with one foot forward, stretch your back and bent your knees. Balancing it up and down as much as you can then change the foot.

Lying on one side with your lower leg bent and the upper one stretched, raise and lower slowly the upper leg. Use of these cells may improve the outcome of stem cell transplants – also called bone marrow transplants – for the treatment of leukemia and other marrow-based diseases. The report has been published on line by the journal Nature Biotechnology to coincide with a similar study in the journal Cell.

“Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation saves many lives every day and is the most established therapeutic application of stem cells, but ironically we know very little about the cells that have made this clinical success possible,” says Harvard Medical School assistant professor Hanno Hock, MD, PhD, of HSCI and the MGH Center for Regenerative Medicine, who led the study. “If we can improve our understanding of the biology of these cells, we should be able to offer our patients more therapeutic options.”

It has been believed that the entire population of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow reproduce at a rate of about 7 percent per day, with each cell dividing every two weeks. But previous investigations of stem cell proliferation appear to have missed the fact that some cells divide much less frequently. The MGH team developed a mouse model in which HSCs could be induced to express a green fluorescent label for a limited period of time. Tracking how long cells retained the label after its expression was halted would indicate how long a cell remained in a resting phase between cell divisions.

While 80 percent of the labeled HSCs were observed to proliferate at the expected rate, 20 percent of cells reproduced much more slowly, dividing once every 100 days or longer. Another experiment found that a gene believed to keep HSCs in a resting state was not required to maintain the reduced rate of cell division in these slow-cycling HSCs, and a mathematical model of HSC proliferation only matched what was actually seen in the labeled mouse model if it assumed two populations of HSCs with differing rates of cell division.

To test whether the rate of proliferation changed the cells’ ability to repopulate bone marrow, stem cell transplants were conducted using HSCs that had been labeled several months earlier and retained varying levels of the green marker – with higher label intensity signifying the slowly proliferating cells. The best results were achieved with cells maintaining the most label, which would signify the slow-cycling population, while cells in which the label was weakest were least able to repopulate the animals’ marrow.

“Our results suggest that we understand a lot less about HSCs than we thought,” Hock says. “If we can find more markers for these slow-cycling cells and identify them in human bone marrow, we may be able to make more of them and find additional clinical applications.” Co-lead authors of the report are Adlen Foudi, PhD, and Konrad Hochedlinger, PhD, of the MGH Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cancer Center. Additional co-authors are Denille Van Buren and Jeffrey Schindler, MGH; Rudolf Jaenisch, MD, Whitehead Institute, and Vincent Carey, PhD, Harvard Medical School.

The study was supported by grants from the Ellison Foundation, the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, the American Society for Hematology, the National Institute of Health, the Kimmel Foundation and the V Foundation.

Make it a better place!

<img style="cursor:pointer; This is happening right in our own backyard.”

A demand for greater urgency

Accompanying Ms. Farrow on her visit was the President of UNICEF Canada, Nigel Fisher. As a UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNICEF Regional Director prior to joining the Canadian national committee, Mr. Fisher has headed up emergency responses in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other places.

“What I see is much less activity here. People with almost nothing are getting very little help,” said Mr. Fisher. “In the whole day in Gonaïves, we didn’t see one pump. We didn’t see any heavy equipment to move the dirt and the mud. So the people are pretty much on their own.”

To date, UNICEF and other humanitarian aid groups have delivered over 1,000 metric tonnes of food and non-food supplies to Gonaïves. UNICEF and its partners are also working to help find secure shelter for families in need. But only a small fraction of the funding requested from a UN flash appeal for Haiti has been pledged.

For Gonaïves, the road to recovery is long, and the end is hardly in sight.

“What we’re seeing is just the tip of the iceberg of decades of chronic decline and increased poverty,” said Mr. Fisher. “The people here are condemned by both internal neglect and international indifference.”

Schools bear the brunt

The task at hand is particularly urgent as the government struggles to meet an already delayed start date for the school year, which is now scheduled to begin on 6 October. With nearly all of the schools in the disaster zones currently being used as shelters, however, that will mean relocating thousands of families and intensively rehabilitating school structures to make them safe and sanitary for students.

Even in the best circumstances, education is one of Haiti’s weakest links. About 67 per cent or school-age children are registered, but far fewer attend. Only 2 per cent finish their secondary education.

Even before the storms, many families were constrained from sending their children to school because of tuition costs and other school fees. Rising food prices, too, have wiped out money put aside for schooling.

Orphans of the storm

At an orphanage in Gonaïves, Ms. Farrow and Mr. Fisher visited 25 children who were safe and clean after the storm, but were cramped into the second story of their school while the first floor remained under several inches of water.

The orphanage director pointed to the children’s latrines, which were accessible only by tramping through deep, putrid mud. “Please help us,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the youngest children in the facility had a different request.

“One little boy said, ‘Stay with us, I don’t want you to go,’” recalled Ms. Farrow. “He said, ‘I will pray for you.’ And I was thinking, if anyone needed prayers and help now, it’s…these orphans on the second floor.

“Those are the most abandoned of an abandoned population,” she concluded, shaking her head sadly. “And he said he would pray for me.”

Afghan children get a chance to be immunized

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SRhgLM1fISQ/SNtOSMYnnOI/AAAAAAAAAKU/YhhwzQsrRj4/s320/ibc_2_POLIO_-_05.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249875865099541730" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SRhgLM1fISQ/SNtOLqK8ulI/AAAAAAAAAKM/fJeO_8PxYCU/s320/ibc_1_polio_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249875752836184658" />
NANGAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan, 22 September 2008 – Afghan and international forces, including the Taliban, have been asked to lay down their weapons in support of the biggest Peace Day that Afghanistan has ever experienced.

Yesterday’s UN International Day of Peace was marked by marches, gatherings and ceremonies. Kites flew all over the country.

UNICEF, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the World Health Organization in Afghanistan urged all sides to take Peace Day as an opportunity to renew their commitment to children’s health and well-being. They asked that schools, literacy centres, students and teachers be protected from attacks.

From January through 20 September 2008, more than 200 school attacks have taken place in Afghanistan, resulting in 37 deaths.

Polio immunization drive

About 14,000 vaccinators are using the hoped-for pause in violence to immunize children against polio in insecure districts in the southern and eastern and western regions of the country – all as part of the National Immunization Days organized by UNICEF, WHO and the Ministry of Public Health.

The three-day campaign, from 21-23 September, will cover districts in Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Nangahar and Lagman, as well as the western region of Farah.

“We will give access to the polio vaccination teams to carry out their activities,” said a statement issued by the Taliban.

Eighteen cases of polio have been reported in Afghanistan so far this year, compared with nine cases during the same period last year. Most of these cases are in the country’s southern and eastern provinces, where access is difficult due to ongoing conflict.

“It is possible to eradicate polio in Afghanistan. However, a commitment is required from all parties to the conflict and [from] communities,” said UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan Catherine Mbengue.

“Our goal is to reach every child in Afghanistan,” she added.

‘A window for peace’

“Today’s events show the huge demand that exists for peace in Afghanistan,” said the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Kai Eide, in his Peace Day message. “A window for peace has been opened, through which the people of Afghanistan are making themselves heard.

“Peace for a day is a start,” he continued. “Peace that is enduring must be our common goal.”

Peace Day was established by a UN resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. In 2002, the General Assembly officially declared 21 September as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

These are some news from UNICEF. I'll bring some more. Yes, I think together we can change the world if we put our minds into it. I'm so happy to see that beautiful things are going on around the world and that some people still care.

Fund 4 Darfur!

<img style="cursor:pointer; The nearly 10 million survivors throughout the United States are living proof. Unfortunately, this stereotypical characterization of the disease is alive and well.

In the early 1970s when little was understood about the disease and treatments were limited, survival was considered a coin toss—at best a 50/50 chance. As if that was not bad enough, patients were sick from toxic anticancer drugs and radiation, and their bodies were often mutilated from radical surgical procedures. These images sadly still cast shadows over the amazing discoveries and triumphs of the last decade.

Today, scientists and clinicians understand that cancer is a disease of genetic mistakes, both inherited and acquired. We can screen for some of them with the goal of preventing the disease from occurring, and if it does occur, we now have treatments that specifically target these errors, eliminating many of the side effects. Breast-sparing, nerve-sparing, and speech-preserving, are just a few of the adjectives used to describe the cancer surgeries performed today. They are surgical techniques that remove tumors while preserving dignity and quality of life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, survivorship is on the rise, with steady increases noted over the last three years. Adjuvant therapies, combined therapies, clinical trials, and prevention trials are all examples of advances that have helped tip the scales so that now there are more people alive with cancer than dying from the disease.

The UN refugee agency in South Ossetia

At this moment, tens of thousands of civilians are living in precarious conditions, having been driven from their homes by the crisis in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia.
Yesterday, the first UNHCR plane carrying emergency aid arrived in the Georgian capital T'bilisi – the first international assistance to arrive in the country since fighting broke out last week. This included tents, blankets, jerry cans and kitchens sets from our central emergency stockpile.
Over the weekend, I made an appeal to the Georgian and Russian authorities to establish humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to flee the conflict zones.
The UN refugee agency has a long-established presence in the region and, since 1993, has been caring for some 275,000 people displaced previously.
Working with local partners, we are now providing assistance to the most vulnerable and needy. These include many young children and family members separated from one another. The situation is evolving rapidly and we are monitoring the needs of the newly displaced population, which now numbers some 100,000.
We urgently need more supplies. We are working actively to get aid to South Ossetia, which has been cut off by the security situation. We also hope to reach at least 30,000 people who have fled across the border into North Ossetia in the Russian Federation.
Please help by donating to our emergency appeal.

We expect the cost of the operation to reach into the millions, so I’m sure you’ll understand why I’m hoping that we can count on you to help.

Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated and make all the difference.

www.unhcr.org

UNICEF Executive Director concludes visit to Madagascar

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar, 30 July 2008 – UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman concluded her visit to
Madagascar by
launching a tetanus campaign in the rural town of Andilamena with the Minister of Health, Dr. Ralainirina Paul Richard, and local officials.

Despite impressive progress in decreasing child mortality rates, Madagascar is one of the only countries in the world – and one of nine in the East and Southern African region – that has not eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus.

“Death due to tetanus is painful,” said Veneman. “But one visit to the local health centre, for a simple immunization, can help save a baby’s life.”

Tetanus, which accounts for an estimated 5 to 7 per cent of all neonatal deaths, is preventable through a vaccination. It is the first immunization that a child will ever receive as it is given by vaccinating the mother before she gives birth.

Benefits of birth registration

Veneman also launched an appeal for all families to register their children at birth. An estimated 25 per cent of Madagascar’s children are not registered.

Many of those children will be left behind without access to basic health services and education. A child without a birth certificate is more vulnerable to sexual exploitation, early marriage and child labour.
To better understand the situation of vulnerable children in Madagascar, Veneman met with young victims of abuse and exploitation.

“We want our parents to protect us so that we can go to school and we want the perpetrators to be arrested,” a young girl survivor of sexual exploitation told Veneman.

The UNICEF Executive Director also visited a community in the outskirts of the capital, Antananarivo, where the Madagascar Rotary Club had installed a pump, which provides clean water for a community of 300 families.

“Water is essential to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals,” she said. “Water is critical for life, for health and for food production.”

The President of Madagascar, H.E. Marc Ravalomanana, emphasized to Veneman that improving access to safe water and sanitation is a key objective of the government.

About UNICEF:

UNICEF works on the ground in more than 150 developing and transitional countries to help children survive and thrive. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for poor countries, UNICEF works to advance the Millennium Development Goals by supporting child health and nutrition, quality basic education for all boys and girls, access to clean water and sanitation, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation and AIDS.

About the UNICEF Executive Director:

Ann M. Veneman assumed the leadership of UNICEF on 1 May 2005, becoming the fifth Executive Director to lead UNICEF in its 60-year history. Prior to joining UNICEF, Veneman served as Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture.
At UNICEF, Veneman directs a global agency of over 10,000 staff and annual total resources of more than $3 billion, funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of governments, businesses, foundations and individuals. Since assuming the position of Executive Director, she has traveled to more than 40 countries, witnessing firsthand the work of UNICEF, speaking at meetings and conferences, and visiting heads of state or government and other partners.

For nine million refugee youth, a chance to learn and play

UN Refugee Agency Launches Innovative Global Campaign with Corporate Partners to Help World's Refugee Youth

LONDON (20 June 2006 – World Refugee Day) – Nine million faces. Nine million names.
Nine million stories. They are the world's forgotten refugee youth. Today, an innovative global campaign is being launched to bring them attention and a better future, a chance to change their future through the power of education and sport. Called ninemillion.org, the campaign aims to create a global community dedicated to giving the world's refugee youth the chance to learn and play.

Ninemillion.org
is being launched as part of World Refugee Day by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the support of founding campaign partners Nike, Inc. and Microsoft,
both founding members of UNHCR's Council of Business Leaders, and Right To Play,
the Toronto-based international humanitarian organization dedicated to using sport and play to foster the healthy physical, social and emotional development of children in refugee camps worldwide.

"Ninemillion.org is about giving the world's refugee youth a chance to see beyond their current situation and begin to rebuild their lives," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. "Our greatest priority is to help refugees in crisis and to find lasting solutions for them. Once out of harm's way, the needs of refugees continue despite having moved off the front pages, and those needs far exceed existing sources of funding. All too often, the world's nine million refugee youth become the most forgotten. They are denied their basic rights to childhood and are left with uncertain futures. Ninemillion.org can help refugee youth by giving them a chance to learn and play, a chance to change their future through education and sport."

Kicking off the ninemillion.org campaign is a 30-second public service announcement featuring Brazilian football star Ronaldo, a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Goodwill Ambassador. The public service announcement is available for viewing at ninemillion.org, which features individual portraits and biographies of refugee youth from camps in Azerbaijan, Uganda and Thailand. These are youth who have seen their parents killed, have fled their homes because of war, or who have been born in a refugee camp and known nothing else. Yet despite the trauma and conflict of their lives, and the harsh conditions of a refugee camp, they are connected by a universal love of sport and the desire to learn and create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Ninemillion.org is committed to giving them that chance.

In addition to raising awareness about refugee youth, ninemillion.org is the primary way individuals can donate money to the campaign. To kick off the fund-raising effort, the Nike Foundation announced a matching grant for the first US$1 million donated to ninemillion.org.

Nike, Inc. supported UNHCR by developing the overall concept and content for ninemillion.org and enlisted key support from other council members such as Microsoft. Nike developed the public service announcement with Ronaldo and other video of refugee youth in Azerbaijan, Uganda and Thailand. T-shirts featuring the ninemillion.org logo will be available for purchase at select Nike retail outlets worldwide, with net proceeds supporting the campaign. Additionally, Nike has donated 40,000 balls, designed specifically for durability in harsh refugee camp conditions, to UNHCR for refugee kids. In recent years, the country has descended into violence.
With it, martial arts, once a popular activity for Timorese youths interested in sports and fitness, have also suffered a setback,
with more and more young people applying their skills to acts of crime and violence.

Mr. Chan reminded some 3,500 young people gathered at the national stadium that “it does not matter what school of martial arts we are from as long as we are united. Training for martial arts helps you to strengthen your eyes, your mind and your body. When you have a good body and mind, let's help people. Don't harm them.”

The Government of Timor-Leste recognizes that strong youth-focused policies, as well as better education and employment opportunities, are critical to the country’s future. UNICEF is working with the government to protect and promote the rights of young people.

Nations unite for World Malaria Day 2008

NEW YORK, USA, 24 April 2008 – Ten years after UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and their partners launched the Roll Back Malaria initiative, malaria is still the single largest child killer in Africa. The disease takes the lives of some 3,000 children per day.

Of the more than 350 million people who are infected with malaria every year, 90 per cent live in sub-Saharan Africa. Work done by the Roll Back Malaria partners has brought millions of children and their families increased access to health and prevention tools, but the threat remains.

These partners, along with governments and public and private-sector organizations, will come together on 25 April, World Malaria Day 2008, in an effort ramp up global action to combat the disease.

‘Curable and preventable’

In malaria-endemic nations, governments spend as much as 40 per cent of their public health expenditures on malaria. This spending, which can be crippling to economic development, is still not enough to cover both treatment and prevention measures – including improved water and sanitation facilities, increased insecticide spraying and the mass distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs).

“It is unacceptable that malaria still kills more than 1 million people, mostly children, every year,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman.
“Malaria is a curable and preventable disease that can be controlled by increasing the use of mosquito nets and other proven interventions as part of integrated, community-based programmes.”
With the assistance of partners such as the
European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department and the Government of Japan, UNICEF has become the largest procurer and distributor of ITNs, having provided more than 18 million nets in 2007. The nets drastically reduce malarial infections.

The Roll Back Malaria partners have also funded and participated in local and national health drives, spreading awareness about the importance of malaria prevention and early treatment. These efforts have gone a long way, but an increase in sustained funding is necessary to allow the partners to build on their success.

A disease without borders

Malaria is endemic in 107 countries and territories where 40 per cent of the world’s population lives. It is truly a disease without borders, the theme for World Malaria Day this year.

“In Ethiopia, 18 million long-lasting insecticidal nets that protect against malaria have been distributed since 2005, and in Kenya 10 million nets have been distributed in the past five years,” noted Ms. Veneman. “These successes show what can be achieved with concerted action.
But with 800,000 African children dying from malaria every year,
it is clear that much remains to be done.”

It will cost an estimated $3.2 billion to achieve global control of malaria. Through increased public and private commitments and partnerships, Roll Back Malaria has raised $1 billion so far.

Investments in malaria control would greatly assist endemic nations in reaching the Millennium Development Goals on extreme poverty and child mortality. Achieving these benchmarks and rolling back malaria, however, will require the commitment of the entire community of nations.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa, albanian: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (August 26, 1910 – September 5, 1997) was an Albanian Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1950. For over forty years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries.
By the 1970s she had become internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless, due in part to a documentary, and book, Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work.

Mother Teresa wrote in her diary that her first year was fraught with difficulties. She had no income and had to resort to begging for food and supplies. Teresa experienced doubt, loneliness and the temptation to return to the comfort of convent life during these early months.
She wrote in her diary:

“ Our Lord wants me to be a free nun covered with the poverty of the cross.
Today I learned a good lesson. The poverty of the poor must be so hard for them.
While looking for a home I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I thought how much they must ache in body and soul, looking for a home, food and health. Then the comfort of Loreto [her former order] came to tempt me. 'You have only to say the word and all that will be yours again,' the Tempter kept on saying ... Of free choice, my God, and out of love for you, I desire to remain and do whatever be your Holy will in my regard. I did not let a single tear come."
Teresa received Vatican permission on October 7, 1950 to start the diocesan congregation that would become the Missionaries of Charity.
"The hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."

In 1952 Mother Teresa opened the first Home for the Dying in space made available
by the City of Calcutta.
With the help of Indian officials she converted an abandoned Hindu temple into
the Kalighat Home for the Dying, a free hospice for the poor.
She renamed it Kalighat, the Home of the Pure Heart (Nirmal Hriday).

"A beautiful death," she said, "is for people who lived like animals to die like angels — loved and wanted."
Mother Teresa soon opened a home for those suffering from Hansen's disease,
commonly known as leprosy, and called the hospice Shanti Nagar (City of Peace).
On March 13, 1997, she stepped down from the head of Missionaries of Charity and died on September 5, 1997.
Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her
death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes
for people with Books have become a scarce and expensive commodity, out of reach for many poor families. The resulting dearth of literature has left well over half of Albanian 15-year-olds unable to complete more than the simplest reading tasks.

“At home I only have three books,” explains Ermedina Hoxha, 13. “The last books the school library received was six years ago but they are inappropriate. We also have books from the old Communist era. If you go to Peshkopi Library they have few books for children – sometimes only one copy.”

‘Learn to read, read to learn’

With €1 million from UNICEF’s largest corporate donor, the Swedish home furnishing retailer IKEA, the ‘Albania Reads’ project aims to open a library in each of 850 schools. In collaboration with the government, libraries have already opened in 160 schools – to the delight of
children and teachers alike.
“What’s best is that the Albania Reads project works with the Ministry of Education so that the books we receive are the same books that children need in literature classes,” says Musa Nikolai, the teacher in charge of the new library at the school in Katundi i Ri.

Forty minutes from Ermedina’s hometown, Katundi i Ri is a small farming community
and typical of the target communities at the heart of Albania Reads.
Many children have no books at home, and it is not uncommon for girls to drop out of school at the age of 13.

“We know reading is very important for learning,” says UNICEF Representative in Albania Carrie Auer. “First you learn to read and then you read to learn. So if we want continuous achievement in school, reading is important.”

Re-establishing the culture of literacy

It is not only schoolchildren who benefit from the project. With the ability to check out books to take home, children are able to share them with parents and siblings. Extending the reading experience to the whole family can help to raise literacy levels across the entire society.

At the same time, teachers are being trained in new techniques to encourage reading, and an Albania Reads awareness campaign is planned to help re-establish the country’s
culture of literacy. Also in the works are a children’s magazine and a national literary award with winners to be decided by young people.

IKEA’s contribution to Albania Reads was part of a $10.5 million donation to UNICEF in 2007. Since 2001, IKEA has given UNICEF a total of $46.2 million to help improve the lives of children around the world.
The children are in desperate need of education! Why not help them?

Heal the world - UNHCR

1.What does UNHCR mean?
The UN Agency for Refugees. Created in 1951, today, UNHCR is responsable with giving the first-aid in 120 countries. UNHCR is the only agency with a specific purpose, to help and solve problems for the refugees all over the world. When people are forced to run away because of a war or persecutions, they go to the UNHCR for immediate assistance. They provide them food, shelter, water, medical care and safety. If necesary, they help them re-establish in other countries and start a new life. UNHCR is apolitical and helps all the refugees uninterested in their race, religion, political oppinions or sex. They focus on humanitarian needs and rights, especially for women and children.

2.Who is considered a refugee?
The Convention from 1951 regarding the refugees, defines the refugee as being a "person which, because of a certain fear to be persecuted for its race, religion, nationality,
being part of a social group or a political oppinion, beyond the borders of its country and because of this fear, doesn't want to remain under the protection of its country."

3.How many refugees are under UNHCR's care?
In 2005, the number of people assisted by UNHCR were almost 19.2 million.
These include almost 9.2 million refugees, 1.5 million repatriated persons, 840. 000 applicants for the asylum,
over 5.5 million people inner displaced and over 2 million apatriated
and other persons of much interest.
More then a half are women and children.
UNHCR operates in 116 countries.
They are active in almost every situation that leaves refugees and parts of the world that are in conflict.
From Columbia to Kosovo and from Angola to Afganistan, UNHCR is there to help people in need. They provide basic services, judicial protection and they want to develope long-lasting solutions for the refugees and other people in need.

It's about being human and trying to help other people that are in danger and need us to CARE!
Personally, I'd be excited to be a part of UNHCR and I'd love to do something for the others..

UNICEF

Every day, on average, more than 26,000 children under the age of five die around the world, mostly from preventable causes.
Nearly all of them live in the developing world or, more precisely, in 60 ’priority’ developing countries and territories.

Many developing countries have achieved some remarkable advances in reducing child deaths over the past few decades. However, much remains to be done. Concrete action must be taken to improve primary health care for mothers, newborns and children. Communities, governments and international health organizations must work together and unite their efforts for child survival.

The State of the World’s Children 2008 reviews the current state of child survival and primary health care for mothers, newborns and children. It also examines the main threats to and solutions for improving child survival today.
The report states that in order to achieve these objectives, the key stakeholders – governments and communities, donors and international agencies, non-governmental organization and private sector collaborators will need to unite their actions and partnerships in support of maternal and child survival and health. Working together, we can ensure that mothers, newborns and children receive quality essential health services, improve their health and nutritional status, and place the survival of children at the heart of global efforts to advance humanity.
acces this link: http://www.unicef.org/voy/
Try to make the world a better place for our children,
and our children's children so that they know it's a better world for them!

Medical treatment for liver cancer

"Nexavar", the pill against liver cancer..
Doctors declared for the first time, that they found a medicine that can increase the chances to survive for people suffering of liver cancer.
A disease that affects over 500 000 people around the world.
Doctors made some research on 602 patients with advaced fases of liver cancer, who took 2 pills everyday of this medicine that contains "sorafenib".
The majority of the patients who had this treatment, lived more, with 30 % then the others.
Scientists say that this is the first systematic treatment for liver cancer. Sorafenib atacks the cancer cell, by stopping its blood alimentation. The tumors don't disappear and don't lose their proportions, but they stop growing. The disease is not cured but the process is being stoped for a few months.
The medicine that contains the substance named sorafenib is found in drug stores as Nexavar. USA and other 12 countries benefit of it.

It's chance for those who suffer from liver cancer and kidney cancer..

SMOKING and LUNG CANCER

The American Department Of Health announced that women are affect more by the lung cancer. This disease is the first one that causes death to women, more then breast cancer and colon cancer.
When we think of lung cancer, most of us believe that the majority of men who are smoking,
can be affected by this disease.
But the reality is totaly different."Lung cancer affects women most then breast cancer, colon cancer and uterus cancer, but they don't realise that they are putting their life in danger." said dr. Jyoti Patel, from oncology, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The risk is that women and doctors don't realise the gravity of the situation regarding the statistics, reported the american authorities. DANGER!

"Women who smoked in their youth and quit, they still have the risk to get sick." added dr. Patel in a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to dr. Patel, the med students learn about the lung cancer as a disease that only appears to 60 year old men who are smoking. That's why a lot of doctors won't warn their patinents (women) of the risks they expose themselves to, by smoking.
In 2003, from 4 cases of cancer to women, one was lung cancer.
It seems that in USA,
over 70 000 died of lung cancer and 39 000 that died from breast cancer, recording to the American Society of Cancer.

SMOKING..The most important thing that leads to cancer is smoking. "If I were asked wich are the 10 things that causes lung cancer, the first nine are smoking." said dr. Patel.
One of five women are smoking and many are pasive smokers. Women that are pasive smokers have a higher risk to lung cancer then men.
Women develope in their lungs small tumors that are more agresive then other tumors wich can be found and treated much easier.
It's also the hormonals differences between man and women,
that's why it affects the evolution of this disease, not favourable to women.

"Women wich get sick, isolate themselves and take over them all the quilt.
That's why they don't participate in campaignes that warn all the women about the lung cancer.
I tell my patients that smoking is a bad choice 'cause it ain't worth it getting sick because of that."
sais dr. Patel. She recommends them to realise how much they harm their body and their lungs by smoking.
She incourages them to participate in campagnes against lung cancer to fight this disease.

Just like a small node makes a woman go to the doctor, the same it should be with the cough.
This symptom can indicate different problems, from simple coulds to lung cancer.
Those who cough frequently, or wake up in the middle of the night because of the caugh, who breath hard, or worst, who spit blood, need to go as fast as they can to the doctor.

LACK OF INTEREST..The reaserch for lung cancer is not interesting,
like other forms of cancer, sais dr. Patel. Only 1.300 $ on a case of lung cancer are spent for research,
30.000 $ on a patient with aids,
18 000 $ on a case with breast cancer and 10 000 $ on a patient with prostate (gland) cancer.
This is happening because of the survivors of the lung cancer, wich are not interested in campaignes for gathering founds for treating this disease.
And worst, the society doesn't take care of the ones that know that they can get sick by smoking.

If you don't wanna quit smoking...then, be realistic about the risk you expose yourself to,
and be sure that someday it's gonna destroy your body, it's either you quit and
protect yourself
or not quit and maybe, be another victime of the lung cancer and all the other forms of cancer!

Make it a better world, STOP smoking..protect yourselves and your children..Have a peaceful life!

Have a clean complexion!

The acne appears to women before the menopause at about 40-50 years old.
It appears and then it disappears, but it always comes back. Americans believe that peanut butter protects our body from heart diseases, cancer, diabetes (II) and Alzheimer.
It was descovered at the end of the 1800, as a product based on nutritional facts especially for the elders, wich have difficulties in chewing solide products. Like the earth nut, it is full of fats, that's why it is not recommended in a strict diet. But these fats are unsaturated, that's why the peanut butter is different then the ordenary butter and other animal fats.
It contains vitamine E (3.2 mg of vitamine E in two spoons of peanut butter).
This butter is made of vegetal proteins, fibre, vitamine B, magnesium, copper, potassium and zinc.
Because of its antioxidant effect, the peanut butter can prevent cronical diseases and it represents a natural alternative for the extra vitamins and minerals.
For all those who love the peanut butter,
I have some great news for you, it's very healthy and it's recommended to be consumed.
                                                                                                                         Enjoy yourselfs!!

Let Your Food Be Your Medicine

Many of the things we put into our mouths cannot be considered food.

Additives, preservatives, and the like can act in the body to burden the liver,
raise blood pressure and even stimulate cancer cell growth.
Food - fruits and vegetables, grains and nuts - are incredibly un-sexy nowadays though they provide all the nutrients the latest ‘discoveries’ tell us we need to be healthy.
‘Food’ has the ability to replenish nutrient shortages, hydrate and detoxify the body, build blood, muscle and bone, create natural energy, boost immunity, fight infection and build the enzymes needed to repair DNA.
Breast cancer begins with damaged DNA. So, whatever protection we can provide to our DNA is worth the effort.
Food for maintaining breast health:
Mushrooms
Maitake mushroom literally means “dancing mushroom”. Historically, Maitake was so rare that people danced when they found it.
Along with other mushrooms in the family (Cordyceps, Coriolus, etc), Maitake contains natural sugars which stimulate cancer fighting NK and T cells.

Turmeric
The turmeric plant gives curried dishes their distinctive yellow color and contains a potent antioxidant called curcumin. Curcumin has multiple cancer fighting mechanisms including downregulating COX-2 (inflammation), EGFR and HER-2 (proliferation triggers). Chronic inflammation has been shown to progress to cancer particularly in the stomach and bladder.

Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel sprouts belong to the Brassica family and contain the chemopreventive agent brassinin. Chopping and light steaming make broccoli’s bioactive compounds more available. Organically grown cruciferous vegetables show higher levels of phytonutrients than conventionally grown.
Grapes are one of the most commonly consumed foods worldwide. Grape seeds, along with peanuts and mulberries, contain resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to possess chemopreventive and anti-tumor properties in laboratory studies.

Leaf Vegetables (spinach, kale)
Doctors recommend getting sufficient amounts of folic acid during pregnancy to protect against anemia. Following this recommendation before and after pregnancy as well can improve breast health. Folate (dietary methyl) is a nutrient that helps to regulate DNA methylation.
This accessory modification then partly controls which genes are switched on or off.
It is important that the so called ‘tumor suppressor genes’ such as BRCA-1 are properly regulated. Thus genes can be influenced by compounds in the foods we eat.

Onions and garlic contain allyl sulfides - compounds that make cells sensitive to the stress of cell division. Because cancer cells divide so frequently they undergo more stress and create more stressors. They are thus more susceptible to damage by allyl sulfides. The effective compounds are best concentrated at home by crushing or finely chopping the garlic and waiting about 15 minutes before cooking.

Soy has been associated with inhibition of breast cancer cells in some but not all laboratory studies. Soy (tofu, tempeh, etc.) contains phyto estrogens which mimic the body’s natural estrogen. It is believed that its tumor inhibiting properties are invoked by binding to estrogen receptors and blocking their growth stimulatory signals.

Special foods, called herbs, typically have little nutritive value but possess potent functional characteristics. Pharmaceutical companies have already harnessed the Pacific Yew tree and Periwinkle plant to create drugs like Taxol and Oncovin. Several other species have significant potential in cancer prevention and treatment.

Astragalus has a long history of use and seems to enhance the immune system by restoring suppressed immune T cell function.
Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) inhibits cancer cell proliferation in research studies.
Mushrooms (Codyceps, Coriolus, Maitake, etc.) show immunomodulating effects. They contain sugars such as polysaccharide-K (PSK) which have been used in Japan as an adjunct to chemotherapy.
Graviola (Annona muricata) may also be known as soursop. These tropical plants contain the Annonaceous acetogenins which stimulate apoptosis (programmed cell death) and seem to convey Graviola’s anti-tumor abilities. Studies also demonstrate Graviola’s capacity to inhibit the removal of cancer drugs from the cells.

Be carefull what you eat 'cause sooner or later it will affect your health!
LET FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE!!!

Chronobiology

Chronobiology investigates biological rhythms - predominantly those that correspond to environmental cycles (tidal, daily, lunar or annual). The most intensively investigated biological timing system is the circadian clock.
Behaviour, physiology, bio-chemistry, and gene expression are temporally structured over the course of a day, generating daily oscillations at all levels of life.

Cycles in attention and activity, in core body temperature and heart rate, in enzyme activity and hormone levels are not simply driven by external changes (e.g., light/dark or warm/cold).
Rather, they are controlled by an endogenous, circadian clock which are found in all phyla - from cyanobacteria to humans. Daily rhythms continue in the absence of environmental signals with their own periods that can deviate slightly from 24 h - hence the term circadian (about one day). Although circadian rhythms are endogenous and self-sustained, the ‘internal day' is regulated by external cues: circadian rhythms are synchronised (entrained) by and to the periodic environment. This ‘entrainment’ uses environmental signals (predominantly light) as 'zeitgebers'.

Over the past decades, circadian research has unravelled many details about how the circa-24-hour rhythmicity is generated at the cellular level.
Clock genes and their products form a complex network of feedback loops.
Approximately 10% of the mammalian genome shows a circadian rhythm in its expression.

The programme of the Gordon Conference on Chronobiology in 2007 covers the most recent insights into the mechanisms of circadian rhythmicity, ranging from genetics, molecular biology and neurophysiology to higher functions such as sleep and performance in shift work.
The contributions reflect the need for our field to show how these temporal programmes
function in the real world under entrainment as well as the necessity to explore clock mechanisms beyond the known transcriptional-translational feedback loops.

Because of the enormous and predictable daily changes in the metabolism of each cell, insights into circadian clocks are essential for medicine as well as for coping with the consequences of life in an industrial society that has us living indoors (i.e., providing weak zeitgebers), performing shift work and incurring jetlag.
It's a very interesting subject.
Not many of us have heared about the chronobiology. It reflects our personal, inside timer. There are some people that know how to use it and they plan their life with this method.
I'll do research about it and try to find out how we can use it so it can be helpful for us.

Miracles made by vitamins

Eating a lot of vegetables and fruits, is a great way to protect yourself from getting sick and premature death, because they contain all the vitamins your body needs. A group of scientists from the Medical and Health Institute in France, INSERM, showed recently that taking extra vitamins is also recommended for the good function of your body.

A scientific study named SU.VI. A similar test with fruits and vegetables couldn't be as useful as with multivitamins because the participants had to eat 5-6 times a day fruits/vegetables.

This was a scientific test that could only be made with extra vitamins to see how the body reacts.
Eat vegetables, and fruits, all kinds, it's very healthy. It can, also reduce lung cancer and larynx cancer, even if that person was a smoker. The most important effect of the carrot is improving the eyes. The carrot contains vitamine A wich is very important for the health of the eyes. When the quanteety of the A vitamine decreases, eyes suffer at the adaptation to the dark and to the light.
The tea with seeds of carrots, can be prepared by infusion.
In a cup of boiled water (250 ml) you put a small spoon of seeds or dry grass and you leave it for 10-15 minutes for infusion.

It's recommended do drink the tea three times a day.
The seeds help digestion and stimulate the menstruation. The last one, is not providing 100% chances of curing and some people can't endure it. Even if this can shock you...it's better to be aware of the consequences if you keep on smoking. Around the world take part a lot of campaigns against smoking but, I guess it's not enough because, so many people are still smoking and also, many people are still dieing because of this bad habit and drug. Protect your children from places where others are smoking, teach your children, especially teenagers about cigarettes, smoking, drugs and the power they have to destroy our body. We have to do something for the humanity..it's sad seeing so many children, adults and old people dieing..
Have the courage and the strength to heal yourself and accept that you are doing a lot of damage to your mind and body by smoking. I wish you good luck and I'll sure keep you healthy informed!

Stop smoking!

The number of people who smoke is growing. Smokers that wanna quit can find all the info about cigarettes on TV, in magazines and newspapers, in flyers and at special counciling to quit smoking.
Why do teenagers start smoking??
Well, because of the period they go through and the transformations of their personality at this age, the environment and their friends who influence them.
You can't start a conversation with a teenager, about smoking without knowing the reason he started doing it.
There are several reasons, like trying to be mature, act like a grown-up, being more self confident and being part of a gang. Of course, teenagers smoke because of the problems they have with their parents or/and at school.
Do we smoke because we like to, beause we need to or we can't quit because it becomes a habit?
Most of the people who smoke, they do it because they like to and also, they made it a bad habit. In my oppinion, the body doesn't need cigarettes to survive, so...I guess smoking is just an action some people are used to do, like dressing some kind of clothes or drinkig coffee.
All the actions we make come from the brain. Our body doesn't need anything and can live
without any substance that doesn't help it's natural function.
How can we STOP smoking? How can we say NO to cigarettes?
It's not easy but it's not so hard, it just takes some responsability to realise how the tobacco destroys our body, how it affects our lungs, our liver and the entire good function of the body.
I've also been smoking for an year 'til I had some problems with my thyroid (gland). I went to the doctor and he told me I had to quit smoking if I wanna live longer.
Than I had to choose, and I chosed LIFE, even if I'm young, I don't wanna destroy my health because someday I'll need it and I won't have it anymore. Nothing is more important in this life then being healthy, because you can't do anything if you don't feel well and if you don't have the power to do all the things you dreamed of.

My advice for all you out there who are smoking and for the others who haven't started yet, you just don't appreciate your health until it's gone. And maybe when you'll realise that, it's going to be to late. Please do have a healthy life!

Your skin can be in danger

A terrible infection, most seen in hospitals, appeared outside the hospital rooms. S. aureus is a staphylococcus that rezists at antibiotics and it is spreding very fast.
It produces an iritation of the skin, wich, if it's not treated it can cause big infections and also, death. Scientists from California University, Los Angeles, descovered that 59% of the skin infections from 11 hospitals were produced by MRSA.
The author of that studies this disease, dr. As the immune system gets weaker, the white cells stop fighting diseases and infections. The viruses that usually were destroyed by the immune system, now, they multiply in the human body. Aids are not caused by the HIV virus, they destroy the defense system of the human body while fighting infections.
First cases of aids had been found in the USA.
In 1981, by the way the disease spred, the scientists believed that aids appeared from other viruses and they discovered that
it has under a 100 years and over 20 years. The effects of the aids appear after 5 to 10 years after the body had been infected. It can be detected in blood, at the brain or on the spine. The simptoms are a lot like a flu with high temperature and other normal flu simptoms. The individual can transmit the HIV virus without being aware. After the HIV virus starts multipling, the aids appear. Diseases like, meningitis, encephalitis and pneumonia can kill the individual. Also, it can develop cancer and hemorrhage, in the last faze of the disease, when the immune system is not reacting anymore.
The first way of transmiting the virus is by sexual contact.
Secondly, from a mother to a baby that still is in the uterus.
And thirdly, through the blood and other liquids of the human body. That's the reason why so many people got infected with the HIV virus by receiving blood from others. Nowadays the blood is very well tested before giving it to the patient.
Protecting yourself from getting ill means, using condoms and not doing drugs. It seams that even the saliva can infect the body.

Surely, AIDS is the most deadly disease in nowadays. In 1991, in the USA almost 10 milion people were infected with the HIV virus and at every 12 minutes, a person died from aids. The World Organization of Health estimated that in 2000, 40 milion people were being discovered as positiv. Almost all the countries are effected by aids, even if some of them are in danger, countries like:North America, Central Africa, Caraibe and South Asia. Because of the many human loses, the scientists tried to find treatments but sadly, there is, still, no treatement yet for the HIV virus. The only way we can protect ourselfs, is using condoms and avoiding activities at high risk.
I am a practician of yoga for almost 4 years and I can say that it
brought me peace,
happiness and a good state of mind, learning me to control my fears and my emotions,
fighting my bad thoughts by controling my mind.
I'm aware that some people are afraid of yoga but, in my opinion,
firstly you should study a lot about this technique and start to practice alone,
at home.
I think each and every individual has it's own way of opening their mind and concetrating<br that you can start yoga when you feel ready to get in touch with your inner issues.
<img The conclusion is that the green tea protects the body from all kinds of diseases by maintaining the immune system
at high level.
It increases the capacity of studing and concentration,
it fights stress, improves memory and the entire body functions.
I'm happy to say that I love drinking green tea better than
anything else, so I'm protected from getting a cold and it makes me
feel better...also it's a good way to eliminate toxines from your body.
I know that, nowadays, people stopped
thinking of their health, that's what concerneds me. Hopefully, I'll do
my best to incourage all of you that it's better to prevent than to treat
a disease. So keep your life as healthy as possible! I owe you an appology
for not posting anything, but I'll keep doing research, as medicine improves
treatements everyday.

Can soybeans really treat cancer?

The soybeans come from Asia and in Europe
they appeared at the end of the 18th century. Those benefits appear to be accumulating more rapidly, with the latest report showing evidence that the decline in cancer deaths nearly doubled from 2002 through 2004, with an average decrease of 2.1% seen each year. Because death rates are considered the best indicator of progress against cancer, this encouraging trend gets top billing in the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2004, Featuring Cancer in American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Looking at the population as a whole, the report shows that cancer death rates have decreased for the majority of the 15 most commonly diagnosed cancers in men and women. This includes important declines in the 3 leading causes of cancer deaths in men -- lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers -- and in 2 of the 3 leading causes of cancer deaths in women -- colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Death rates from lung cancer, the number one cause of cancer death in both sexes, continued to increase in women, but at a substantially slower rate than in years past.

"The evidence is unmistakable: We are truly turning the tide in the cancer battle," said John R. Seffrin, PhD, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. "

On the other hand, increased screening could be connected to an increase in incidence because more cancers are being found before they cause symptoms. That's what researchers think caused a jump in prostate cancer rates between 1988 and 1992.

Among the caveats and clarifications to consider in the latest statistics on cancer incidence:

For men, incidence rates for all cancers decreased by 4.3% per year from 1992 through 1995 and were stable from 1995 through 2004. But incidence rates of myeloma and cancers of the liver, kidney, and esophagus continued to increase for men through 2004.

For women, incidence rates for all cancers combined stabilized from 1999 through 2004 after years of increases. Still, the rates for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, leukemia, and cancers of the bladder and kidney have been increasing for 29 years. Thyroid cancer incidence rates in women have been going up since 1980.

Lung cancer incidence rates in women stabilized from 1998 through 2004 following a period of long-term increase. In this case, incidence rates lag behind smoking patterns by several years. Smoking became more common among US women in the years after World War II, leading to higher lung cancer rates down the line. As anti-tobacco efforts have led to lower smoking rates, the increase in lung cancer incidence rates is leveling off.

Lung cancer incidence rates in men declined 1.8% per year from the period 1991 through 2004.

Colorectal cancer incidence rates decreased by more than 2.0% per year for men and women, likely due to prevention through the removal of precancerous polyps.

This month I'll do more research to this subject, as both women and men are exposed to breast cancer, and also, october happens to be the awareness breast cancer month...hope I kept you all healthy informed .Have a nice day!Carly

                     The cancer cell

October-breast cancer awareness month

Could that sexy underwire bra cause breast cancer? What about that frozen yogurt you just ordered? Or hormone therapy? And how would you know if you had the disease until it was too late anyway? Don't some studies show that examining your breasts and getting mammograms are useless?
No risk factor either alone or in combination with others means you'll definitely get breast cancer. There are various factors that may increase your risk of developing the disease. Some of these appear to increase your risk only slightly. They include smoking, drinking (more than five alcoholic drinks per week year after year), getting your first menstrual period before age 12, continuing to have periods after age 50, and not having your first full-term pregnancy until after age 30. If you have a number of these, the increase in risk can start to be more meaningful. That said, even an inherited genetic abnormality in your family doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get breast cancer. Abnormalities in the so-called breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 are very strong risk indicators. But 20 to 60 percent of women with these inherited abnormalities will not develop breast cancer.

Using natural treatments against cancer

It's best for us to know the simptoms of the brest cancer so we could get to the doctor as soon as possible and start treating the disease. A few simptoms that can indicate a breast cancer are: the appearance of a knot on the breast or a scar that itches. Such as cutting nursing, increasing the number of abortions, being to much overweight and smoking could lead to fall ill. Besides the diet, the most important medicine is the Sark Aid. Why does the Shark Aid cure cancer?? Well, because it stimulates the immune system. The aid of the shark is one of the fewest tissues that impregnates from the closest internals and because of the proteins it develops an anti-tumoral. The shark is the only animal that doesn't have cancer, they haven't changed their morfology for over 400 million years and their wounds heal rapidly. There are a lot of treatments for cancer, and everyday scientists find another cure, even if around the world a lot of people, young or old, die of this disease.

Breast cancer

Metastatic breast cancer spreads faster to women who suffered a traumatic or stressful event according to the University of Rochester Medical Center scientists. Studies show that women who endured a physical or a sexual abuse, see that the tumors return after 2-5 years, while other women with peaceful lives see recurrences after 5 years.
Scientists believe that stress can lead to breast cancer, and it affects the process of spreding killer cells through the body, they also relate the disease to the cause of a stressful event such as losing a loved one.Still, the research continues, as scientists are intrigued by the conflicting evidence.
This research included, as well 94 women who were categorized by the experience they had, either traumatic or stressful with other women who had not faced similar situations.
They studied the cortisol levels from saliva samples from the participants. Cortisol is produced by the body when it faces stress and fear, and there is growing evidence that abnormally prolonged cortisol production inhibits the body's immune response. Palesh said:
"Extended periods of stress and trauma and its resulting cortisol production may interfere with the body's ability to fight off cancer progression. When there is consistent, long-term stress in the body, the elevated cortisol level may can change the body's normal rhythms and potentially reduce resistance to tumor growth."

I find this article very interesting, that's why I wanted to share it with you to. Personally, it's been a pleasure to find as much info as I can about cancer. My name is Carla Stoicescu and I love helping people. All my life I have tried,
and hopefully I have managed to help everyone around me. On both sides, fizical and mental. This is the reason I actually started blogging...to help people get the information they need to live a healthy life. Not that there is no information about this on the Internet, but I will help people out by gathering all sort of medical info, news and stories in a user-friendly manner. Everyone will be able to read and understand all my reviews and personal oppinions about all products. First I will post some information about products that belong to my favorite niche, and that is oncology. For anyone who doesn't know where does that come from...well, it's about cancer. The deadliest cure-less disease nowadays. I'll do my best to keep you healthy informed.
Best regards, Carly.
